Back Pain Physical Therapy in South River, NJ

If you live in South River and back pain is making everyday life harder, you do not have to travel far to find specialized care. Spineck Physical Therapy is just minutes away on Route 18 North in East Brunswick, and we treat South River patients with the same one-on-one, assessment-first approach we use for every patient.

An Assessment-First Approach to Back Pain

Many people who come to us have already tried other things — rest, medication, generic stretches, or a course of care that didn't feel tailored to them. Back pain also has a habit of coming back: in one study of 250 people who had recently recovered from an episode, about 7 in 10 had back pain again within a year.[1] Guidelines recommend starting with non-drug care, such as education that supports self-management, a return to normal activities, and exercise, yet rest is still widely overused.[2]

Our approach starts with a careful assessment rather than a one-size-fits-all routine. For nearly all people with low back pain, no single specific source of the pain can be identified,[3] so we use the McKenzie Method (Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy, or MDT) to see how your symptoms respond to repeated movements and positions.

In research studies, about two in three people with spinal pain had a direction of movement that eased their symptoms or drew the pain back toward the spine, while about a third had neither.[4] When this response is present, it is linked with a better outlook, especially for low back pain, although research has not yet shown that it predicts who will do better with MDT than with other treatments.[4]

U.S. physical therapy guidelines list MDT as an option therapists may use to reduce pain and disability in long-lasting (chronic) low back pain, based on moderate evidence; for recent (acute) back pain the support is weaker, and MDT has not been shown to work better than other common treatments.[5]

Back Pain Problems We Commonly See

Back pain often has more than one contributing factor. Physically demanding work, other physical or mental health conditions, smoking and obesity are all linked to a higher risk of back pain,[3] and South River residents are no different from anyone else in dealing with:

  • Pain that builds up during long hours of sitting at work or commuting
  • Pain with repetitive lifting and bending
  • Disc-related problems and sciatica
  • Pain that flares when you hold one position or an awkward posture for a long time
  • Lingering pain after an old injury, or back pain that keeps coming back

In the same study of people who had recently recovered from back pain, sitting more than 5 hours a day, frequent awkward postures and more than two previous episodes were each linked to a higher chance of the pain returning within a year.[1]

Whatever is behind your pain, our goals are the same: work out which movements and positions aggravate and ease it, help settle your symptoms, and give you exercises and strategies to manage flare-ups yourself. In prevention studies, exercise, especially when combined with education, appears to lower the chance of a new episode of back pain.[6] Not every program works, though: in one trial of people who had recently recovered from back pain, a two-session McKenzie-based self-management program did not meaningfully reduce the risk of activity-limiting back pain returning, although it may have lowered the chance of a recurrence that led people to seek care.[7]

Why South River Patients Choose Spineck

  • True one-on-one care. You see the same McKenzie-certified therapist every single visit — never an aide, never a shared hour.
  • Specialized expertise. Devanshi Modi, PT, holds the Cert. MDT credential and brings 15+ years of experience treating spine pain.
  • Assessment-first focus. We look for the movements and positions that aggravate and ease your pain and build your plan around what we find. When a pain-easing direction of movement is found, research links it with a better outlook for recovery, though not everyone has one.[4]
  • Conveniently close. Our Route 18 location is a short drive from South River.

Conditions We Commonly Treat

Beyond general back pain, our spine-focused practice also sees patients with neck pain, sciatica, herniated discs and other mechanical spine problems, using the same individualized, assessment-first approach.
